Why is it called Peters Canyon?

Peters Canyon is named after James Irvine’s landowner, who leased the canyon to several farmers in the late 1800s. Beginning in 1891 and continuing until 1897, James Peters dry-farmed barley and beans in the upper part of Peters Canyon.

The rancho was purchased by James Irvine and he leased it out to various farmers over a period of time. In 1897, when Irvine bought the property, all farming had ceased due to lack of water availability on the property; however, maize cultivation continued below where Peters resided for some time thereafter because irrigation wasn’t possible at that point either The canyon received its present name in 1898 when JameS Irvina registered it with county officials.
